As many staff, physicians and researchers at BWH can attest to, space is at a premium at the hospital. To grow in areas of patient care, research and teaching, plans are in place to expand beyond the hospital’s current physical boundaries. “It is evident that the hospital is being challenged by its own success, as BWH’s ability to grow is severely constrained by a lack of available on-site space,” said Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer at BWH. According to Vice President of Support Services Arthur Mombourquette, the hospital’s expansion plan includes two new buildings, leasing of more off-site space and continual renovations of existing hospital property. The two buildings will be constructed on sites adjacent to the main campus of the hospital. One building, referred to as the “ledge site” project, will be built diagonally from 15 Francis Street at Brigham Circle and will be home to office space, dry research and subleased retail space. Groundbreaking should begin on this project by spring 2002 and the completion date is planned for winter of 2003. The other building, temporarily known as “The Center for Advanced Medicine” project, will host high-tech ambulatory services and will be constructed across from BWH’s 75 Francis entrance at the corners of Binney and Vining Streets. Construction plans on this project are not yet finalized. In addition to new construction, more off-site locations will be leased for BWH office and research space. These locations include 10 Brookline Ave., Partners University Park Research Building (65 Landsdown Street, Cambridge), the second HIM building (HIM-2, located next to HIM-1 at 77 Avenue Louis Pasteur) and a Children’s Hospital-owned building on Blackfan Circle. Various departments have been asked to move from the main campus to these off-site locations. For example, Finance, Research Administration and Human Resources will be moving to 10 Brookline Ave. by the end of the year. Four major in-house renovations are also in progress: • A new thoracic intensive care unit on Tower 11C to be completed by February, 2001 • A new CT installation on Tower 9 between pods B and C, for inpatients, will be ready by March, 2001 • Major renovations continue on Tower L1 and L2 to expand administrative space associated with the growing surgical and clinical activity on these two floors • The creation of an Inpatient Pavilion is underway on Tower 16CD, adding 14 new beds “These solutions provide BWH with the space needed to continually grow as a Top 10 teaching institution,” said Van Vranken. “We appreciate the cooperation of those employees in departments moving to off-site locations as well as those who work in areas currently undergoing renovations.” Updates on the progress of the various construction and renovation projects will be included in upcoming issues of Bulletin.
